Okay so taking photos of products is actually one of the most interesting parts because there are so many opportunities that you can use to create stunning photos.

And here are 5 tips and tricks to improve your product photography so let’s get started.

1 – Focus on selling the product

And the first tip is to not actually think about that you need take a photo. Instead you need to think about how to sell a product. Because in most cases you need to deliver a certain idea that represents the product. So for example if you want to sell a really expensive watch you should create a set that fits this niche. Your photo needs to tell a story and exactly that is your part here as a photographer. You need to be creative because your photo is the first connection between the customer and the product. So it’s really important to actually focus on the idea of selling a product with just one picture and thats why this picture needs to be top notch. Story is king.

2 – Light

Tip number 2 is all about light. And yeah the key is to actually use light to let the product stand out. Of course if you need to take these white background product photos for online shops as an example you need to use light in a different way but if you can build a set you can do all kind of stuff to create a special product photo. So for example use a soft box as a key light and try to use candles to add some additional warm light. Another really cool tip is to use your smartphone as a light source. As an example you can use your flashlight as a light source or even the screen itself. Simply put a specific color on full screen like orange and increase the brightness of your smartphone. Now you can add this color to your product shot by simply moving the smartphone around until you have found the right spot. So just be creative and try to get the most out of each setup.

3 – Reflections

The third tip is all about reflections and yeah I really like to use reflections to add some nice effects to my images. But it is really important to avoid weird reflections on the product itself. Like the light-source for example or even yourself. A common mistake is that the product itself reflects the light source so definitely keep that in your mind when you start to take photos because they actually lower the quality of a product photo if you can see a part of the set for example. So yeah you should definitely avoid these weird reflections actually double check your photos and if there are some bad reflections change the setting or angle to get better results.

4 – Don’t be afraid to experiment

But now let’s move on to number 4 and this one is all about „Don’t be afraid to experiment“. Whenever I’m part of a photography session I always let people know that I want to know if someone has an idea for a photo because a different point of view can actually improve the final results of the session. Of course I mostly have a basic plan but I always try to include all kind of ideas to improve my work. So maybe play around with the set, change things up because yeah maybe a different angle or a different background could be the way to go to get a way better image.

5 – Use Nature

And number 5 is a great tip if you can’t find a good spot for a product photo at home. Sometimes it can be way better to use the nature like a forest, your backyard, a park or all kind of other places as a set. There are a lot of good opportunities out there to let the product stand out especially if you use a setting that fits the style or the idea of a product. So actually be a little bit creative and use the nature as a perfect place to present the product in a great way.
