Alright so today it’s time to talk about the Canon EOS R.

Canon EOS R (Amazon): https://amzn.to/2Ljw7bv *

Okay so the Canon EOS R5 and R6 are out know for a while and both cameras are extremely good. But what’s about the original Canon EOS R from 2018? Well today we will talk about some reasons why it’s might be worth it to check out this camera. So lets get started.

1 Video Footage

And Number 1 is all about the video footage. If we take a look at the video output options of the Canon EOS R we can see that there is everything that you need to record some high quality videos. You got 1080p up to 60fps and 4k up to 30fps. And basically thats everything that you need to create some good content. The standard video quality on YouTube is still 1080p, so it’s actually not even necessary to use 4k material right now to record your footage. A lot of people even scale their 1080p videos up to 4k when they export their videos and I did that too until I got the EOS R5. So all in all that’s absolutely not a huge problem.

But of course you can record in 4k too. But here I need to mention that the 4k output crops in and that’s why I highly recommend to use a wider lens to compensate the crop. But yeah all in all the video footage of the EOS R is in my opinion still top notch and you wont have any problems to record some good videos. On top you have the C-LOG option that allows you to get a nice flat image to make your own color correction. And I highly recommend to use that because it’s actually really fantastic.

2 Photography

And yeah of course we need to talk about the photo quality too. I used the Canon EOS R for client work and for all kind of stuff on YouTube and Instagram. I just need to say that the image quality is absolutely amazing. The 30.3 mp sensor and the AF are great and whenever I can’t use my Canon EOS R5 I still use my EOS R because it’s a great camera to take high quality images. I will link some of my Canon EOS R photography sessions in this Blog Post, so if you are interested in some Behind The Scenes and what you can do with these RAW files of the EOS R definitely check out these videos.

3 RF Mount

The next reason is all about the new Canon RF Mount. The new RF lenses are just awesome. Currently my favorite RF lens is the Canon RF 35mm 1.8 Macro and I use it for a variety of things including video recording. I just need to say that I love the overall image quality and on top that’s currently one of the cheapest RF lenses. You can get one for around $500 and its absolutely worth it because of the crazy image quality. But overall the new RF glass is just worth it so if you are looking for some good lenses these are the way to go.

4 EF Lenses

But there is another reason and here we need to talk about EF lenses.

I already have a couple of EF lenses and I can still use all of them even with the new mount. And the reason is the EF-RF adapter. This one makes it possible to use older EF glass with the R system without having any major downsides and that’s the perfect opportunity to make the jump to a new RF mount because you don’t have to buy all kind of new lenses if you already use Canon glass. The only downside is this that you have to use this little adapter but I think thats something that won’t be a huge problem for most of the photographers and filmmaker out there. So if you want to upgrade to the RF mount that is the easiest way because you can slowly upgrade your lenses in the next couple of years.

5 Flip-Out-Screen

Number 5 is all about the Flip Out Screen. And I need to say that I’m really happy that currently more and more cameras finally have flip out screens because there is no reason why a camera like this shouldn’t have a flip out screen. It’s a feature that makes it way easier to record videos or to take pictures in all kind of situations and I absolutely need to say that I don’t want to miss this anymore.

6 Workflow

Number 6 is all about the workflow. The Canon EOS R body is a little bit smaller than the Canon EOS R5 and I need to say that I prefer the R5 body and button layout but the EOS R is still not too big and not too small. The overall handling is absolutely easy. You can find everything in the menu really fast, the overall structure is great and I never had any problems while using this camera. The only downside that I need to mention is the touch-bar. I never used it because it wasn’t that practical but thats it. It’s a great camera body.

7 Hybrid Camera

And number 7 is in my opinion one of the most important reasons to buy a camera. I totally understand that some people just want to take photos or just want to record videos. And in the future I will buy a „video only“ camera as soon as I can build a new studio but most of the time when I’m out there I like to do both. Video and photo. I actually don’t want to carry two cameras all the time just in case if I want to record a video for example. Sometimes there is a situation where you want to take a quick photo but if you have to pick up your photography camera first, switch lenses, set it up (and all kind of stuff like that) the situation its already gone. So thats why I really like hybrid cameras that actually allow me to do both. I can simply switch between photo and video and whenever I need to use the different mode I can switch between them with just a couple of clicks. So this hybrid package makes it way easier for me to get my work done and its packed in such a small camera body. Of course if you just focus on photo or just on video it can be better to buy such a camera. Like the Sony A7S III as an example for video.

But if you are looking for a camera that can do both (video and photo) the EOS R is a great choice.

8 Battery

Another reason why the Canon EOS R is actually worth it is the battery. Canon decided to use their typical batteries in the EOS R, R5, R6 and so on. And that is great because the battery life is fantastic. I never had any problems in all kind of situations but I highly recommend to have at least a second battery in your bag just to be sure that you wont run into problems. And second you don’t have to buy new accessories like batteries if you switch to the R5 for example. I can still use all my old batteries and the new one of the R5 is just better. So yeah I can actually saved some money because I currently don’t have to buy new / additional batteries after upgrading my camera.

9 Autofocus

Number 9 is the Autofocus. Yeah of course there are some better versions already out there especially if we take a look at the EOS R5 and R6. But that doesn’t mean that the AF from the EOS R isn’t good. I definitely need to say that the Autofocus of the EOS R is still extremely good and I still use the EOS R as my backup camera. So for example if you are looking for a good vlogging camera you can still use the EOS R because the eye detection makes it way easier to record these kind of videos.

10 Lower Price

And number 10 is the price. In my opinion the Canon EOS R is a perfect opportunity to make the jump to the RF mount and currently you can get the EOS R used for around $1200-1300. So yeah thats a really good price to get started and this package includes everything that you need to record good videos / take photos. I mean you have the opportunity to use EF and Rf lenses, you can record in 4k, the overall image quality is awesome and later on you can still upgrade to the R5 or R6 for example if you need better specs. So especially if your budget isn’t that big the EOS R is actually a great choice.
