5 Underrated Features of the Canon EOS R

Alright so the Canon EOS R is now a couple of years old and it got a lot of controversial comments about all kind of things. Surprisingly still today people ask me if the Canon EOS R is good or if its worth it and that’s why I want to talk about the Top 5 underrated features of the Canon EOS R and why I still use it next to my Canon R5.

1 So let’s get started with number 1 the image quality.

With the EOS R Canon tried to actually combine all kind of things that you need for great images. The EOS R got a 30.3 mp Sensor that you can use to take stunning images and whenever I’m out there to take photos with the Canon EOS R it never let’s me down. The image quality is top notch and especially the RAW files are great to get the results that you want to have.

Of course in terms of video features most of the cameras record in 4k without a crop but still today the EOS R video quality is great. I use it all the time when I can’t record with my R5 and it’s never a huge problem to combine the footage of the EOS R and R5. Of course if you want to record in 4k you need wider lenses to compensate the crop factor but in most cases that is not a huge problem. Especially if you don’t want to record vlogs for example it’s not a big deal.

2Another feature that I want to talk about is the battery life.

Because obviously if you want to use better specs your camera needs a lot of power. And if you combine that with a small camera body you will notice that you simply can’t include a huge battery. But the Canon EOS R actually manages that really well. The EOS R uses the typical LPE6N Batteries. I currently have two of these in my camera bag all the time and I never had any problems to get my work done. In most cases I just had to use one battery but I always recommend to have a second one in your bag just in case if you need it.

3 The next feature that I really like is the Camera Sensor Cover.

In most cases if you switch lenses it is possible that you get a lot of dust on the sensor because there isn’t anything in-front of the sensor that protects it. But in this case Canon decided to include a Sensor cover so you can always switch lenses without having any huge problems. As soon as you turn off the camera or detach the lens the camera closes the shutter and that’s absolutely fantastic to avoid all kind of problems especially if you need to switch lenses in the nature for example. In my opinion that’s actually one of the best features to protect your own camera.

4 Number 4 is all about lenses.

In most cases if you switch to a new Camera mount – like this RF mount here – you have to buy new lenses. And of course that always costs a lot of money especially if you need high-end lenses. Another option is to buy an adapter to use other lenses but in most cases they won’t work properly or the image quality isn’t the best. And to avoid all these problems Canon decided to introduce their own EF to RF adapter which allows you to use your older EF glas with the new RF mount. So in the end you can slowly upgrade your lenses and you don’t have to buy everything from scratch just to use your new camera. I mostly use it to attach my EF 70-200 2.8 and it’s just awesome. Of course – in the future – I want to make the jump to the RF 70-200 2.8 but I don’t have to do it right now because it’s still possible to use my older version without having any huge problems. And that is in my opinion the best way to make it as easy as possible for everyone to slowly upgrade to the RF mount.

5 Basics.

Here I’m talking about things like the flip-out-screen. And I need to say that I’m really happy that currently more and more cameras finally have flip out screens because there is no reason why such a camera shouldn’t have a flip out screen. It’s a feature that makes it way easier to record videos or to take pictures in all kind of situations and I absolutely need to say that I don’t want to miss this anymore.

Another basic is the workflow. The overall handling is absolutely easy. You can find everything in the menu really fast, the overall structure is great and I never had any problems while using this camera. The only downside that I need to mention is the touch-bar. I never used it because it wasn’t that practical but thats it. It’s a great camera body with an easy to use menu.

And last but not least the Canon EOS R is a hybrid camera so this camera sets the focus on both Video and Photo. I actually don’t want to carry two cameras all the time just in case if I want to record a video for example. Sometimes there is a situation like: You want to take a quick photo but you have to pick up your photography camera first, switch lenses, set it up (and all kind of stuff like that) and the situation its already gone. So thats why I really like hybrid cameras that actually allow me to do both. I can simply switch between photo and video and whenever I need to use the different mode I simply press a couple of buttons and thats it. So in the end this hybrid package makes it way easier for me to get my work done and its packed in such a small camera body. And that’s in my opinion extremely important.

Stay Frosty!
