Okay so today it’s all about 5 must follow product photography tips and tricks to take some better product photos. All these sample images that I use in this blog post are just my photos so none of these are sponsored. Just to mention that really quickly. But now les get into todays topic.

Settings & Focus

And the first tip for today is all about the right settings and the focus of the picture.

Of course its a little bit obvious that you need to set up the right aperture, iso and shutter speed to get a good result. For example if your shutter speed is too slow and you try to take pictures handheld its most likely that your pictures are blurry because your camera needs too much time to take the image.

So if you need to use a slow shutter speed I highly recommend to use a tripod to make it easier for you to get the shot. Thats why it is really important to have enough time to set up your camera correctly just to avoid the situation that you only get shaky / blurry footage.

Aperture

The second aspect is all about Aperture. Especially if you try to take product photos you need to be sure that it is the key element of your image. And to push that even further you can use a small f-stop like 1.8 or 2.8 to create a nice bokeh. I really like to use this as an advantage to make sure that the viewer knows exactly what is the key element of the image. But of course it always depends on the overall composition. Sometimes it can be better to use a larger f-stop number to be sure that you capture all the details of a product. Especially if you want to take product photos with a white background I highly recommend to use a larger f-stop number just to get the most of the product in focus.

So before you start taking random shots I highly recommend to think about how the final result should look like and to come up with a basic idea first because if you do this upfront it is way easier for you to get some good results faster.

Composition

And that why we need to talk about the next aspect. The next tip is all about the composition. And here it is really important to not stick to one composition because in most cases a product always have a I would call it a „perfect angle“ that lets the product shine. And thats the one that you need to find so I highly recommend to switch between multiple angles and compositions to find the perfect result. Even if you have taken a good shot maybe you can improve that by adjusting the angle a little bit for example. So don’t just stop there. Be creative and play around with all kind of settings angles until you notice that you have got the best shot.

Set

The next tip that I can give you is all about your set. And here it’s really really important that you don’t clutter your set. Always stay simple and don’t put too many things in the frame because all kind of things can take away the focus from your key element. In the end you want to sell a product so the viewer needs to know what is going on in your image. Another really important aspect here is that you shouldn’t put multiple products into one frame. So if you want to take a picture of a specific watch for example you shouldn’t put all kind of other watches in the frame because this will make it way harder to find the key element. Always stay focused and make it as simple as possible to check out the product itself.

Editing

Of course we need to talk about editing too. And I absolutely understand that you have a unique picture editing style that you want to use in your editing and that’s absolutely fine. But especially if you do some client work for example and you need to take some product photos it is really important to stick to the real colors of the product because if someone wants to buy a product this person wants to know how the product looks like in real life. So if a product is white for example don’t make the overall image blueish. You can do all kind of stuff in the editing but be sure that it wont affect the overall presentation of the product itself. Definitely avoid the situation that the colors won’t match the product anymore.

Bonus : Rules

And here is a quick bonus tip. And this one is all about something that is in my opinion really important and thats why we need to talk about it. Of course tips or rules like the last one are in my opinion really important to get some good results so you simply won’t waste your time making some stuff that won’t help a customer to find the right product. But sometimes it can be better to break the rules to get a better result. So if a set with a lot of products is the way to go… yeah go for it. Or if your client wants a composition that might not be your favorite one… just break the rule. In the end it’s not how you got the shot its just about the final result. So stay focused on that and try to get the most out of each situation.
