Alright so let’s talk about a lens that is cheap and perfect for product photography if you are just starting out!

Okay so I mostly say invest in your gear and especially buy good lenses because yeah high quality glas is in my opinion way better then a high end camera body. Because if you have a high end camera but pair it with cheap lenses the overall quality won’t actually improve that much. But if you have a midrange camera body and use some high end lenses the image quality you can achieve with such a camera will be way better.  And especially in these days there are plenty of good cameras out there and if you currently have a decent camera at home you won’t have any problems to get some good footage if you have good lenses.

But I need to mention that there are some cheap lenses out there that are actually pretty good like this one here. The Canon EF 50mm 1.8. This lens costs around $100 so yeah it is actually really really cheap and especially if you don’t have a huge budget for lenses I highly recommend to check out this lens.

Of course in contrast to some other lenses the overall build quality of this lens isn’t the best – so it’s basically a plastic lens – but it got a metal mount which is fantastic. I mean even the EF 10-18mm lens got a plastic mount and this lens costs way more then this 50mm here.

But yeah back to the 50mm. If we take a look at this lens we have the switch for the focus – so manual or auto focus – right here, next the focus ring and yeah that’s it.

So now let’s move on and the next aspect is of course the image quality.

The overall image quality is absolutely amazing. I mean keep that in your mind this is a $100 lens. I tested this lens with all kind of cameras so in this case the Canon 80D the EOS R and the R5 and I definitely need to say that if you are just starting out with a 80D or 90D buy this lens. Even if you are a professional photography I still highly recommend to have this lens in your set because such a 50mm lens is awesome for all kind of portraits and on top if you break this lens on a shoot it’s not that hard to replace this lens because it’s so cheap.

On top this is a 1.8 lens so especially in low light situations that is extremely awesome and you can get a really nice bokeh effect in your images or videos too.

But of course there are some downsides and the key factor is the Autofocus. The auto focus motor is loud so especially if you record videos you need to keep that in your mind.

But especially if you do photography like product photography and you just want to get started I can highly recommend this lens. And this is one of the first lenses that I’ve bought for my Canon 80D and I still love it.

Stay Frosty!
