Alright so today I want to talk about emphasis in photography and how you can improve your images by using a few tips and tricks that are actually really easy to do.

In most cases when you take a photo you always have a key element that should get all the attention. That could be a model, a leaf, a mountain or what ever you want to set your focus on.

But in some cases it can be really hard to identify these key-elements so that’s why you need to make it as easy as possible for other people to understand your composition and to identify your key element.

And exactly thats why I want to talk about a few tips and tricks that you can use to let your key element stand out.

Color
If you take a photo you can easily use colors to let a key element stand out.

A simple example would be a photo that is mostly black and white except of your key element. If there aren’t any other colors except of this one color it absolutely draws all the attention to it.
Another way to achieve that would be to create a contrast in your image by using special colors to let something stand out. For example use complementary colors such as green and red. There are tons of options to play around with all these colors

So if your composition needs a little push this solution can actually help you to push your image to the next level.

Dark & Bright
Another great example that you can use is a dark background and a bright key element. Again this makes it possible to let your key element shine because the brightest spot in the image stands out and gets all the attention. I absolutely love to use that because it actually creates this awesome dark and moody look that I really like and it makes it so much easier to find those key elements.

Bokeh
But of course you can improve your images even before you edit them. So let’s talk about taking photos a little bit.

The next tip that I can give you is to use a Shallow Depth Of Field while taking photos to set the focus on your main subject. This actually allows you to blur most of the image except for the focus point so the image itself pushes all the attention to the sharp area of your image. Thats actually in my opinion one of the easiest ways that you can use to push the viewers attention in a certain direction. And I highly recommend to combine these tip here. So for example use some nice colors in combination with a shallow depth of field. These combinations can actually create a way better image so definitely use it as an advantage here.

Framing
But now let’s move on to the next tip and another great tip that I can give you is to use framing. If you take a picture through something that is in the foreground you can frame your key element in your picture and that makes it possible to push the attention of the viewer in this direction because the interesting part is in this frame. And yeah it is actually really easy to do you can use a fence or even a book  and play around with the angle or position until you are happy with the result. Or try to include it into the framing. Like on this one here. The leaf is connected to the fence, the focus is set on the leaf and that pushes the attention straight to the leaf while all these lines around it are just supporting this composition.

In the end it’s all about the idea and how you can use different styles to support your key element. As I already mentioned you can make some adjustments in the editing or even try to include more or less stuff while taking the picture. The most fundamental part here is just be a little bit creative and actually try different settings, angles and positions because these tiny steps can turn a boring shot into a great photo.

Stay Frosty!
